Best wireless router for NYC dwellers

Mar 30, 2005 9:33PM PST

I am setting up a wireless system for my 3 computers. I live in NY in a high rise and have some friends that have had a lot or trouble doing the same. If the computer is in another room there are lots of drops.

Is there a good router and card that will give a strong signal and be easy enough to setup that can give me a strong, consistant connection?

My systems are all fairly new dells with WinXP os.

Thanks

maybe you have to use a repeater..

or range expander..

I don't know the building construction in NYC, I guess its using alot of concrete and or steel...

Take a look at linksys website... they have a range expander, and portable access point that also can be use as repeater...

Google it .. many brand are available .. such as apple airport express, netgear, belkin, d-link, etc.

You may need/use more than one... (one in each room...)

Why are there "drops"?

I don't live in a high rise, but from my experience there might be several reasons for the drop outs unrelated to brand of equipment. Microwave ovens, 2.4Ghz cordless phones, and some baby monitors use the same radio frequencies and can sometimes interfere with a wireless connection. I can control, or at least be aware of, the popcorn in my microwave oven. I can get a different cordless phone if it causes my WiFi router to choke or cough. I don't have any babies in my house anymore. But I would have no control over any of that in the apartment next door or above or below.

My personal preference of brand is Buffalo. Some swear by Linksys, D-Link, and Netgear. Others swear at them.

Support?
Apr 4, 2005 10:43PM PDT

Thanks for the info so far. One of my concerns was not so much the place where I buy the router but also the products tech support.

I have had some real nightmare problems with out of the country support so I was hoping to find a product that has their support not only in the in the USA but the support is first rate.

Any ideas there?

Cost?

As the pressure to reduce prices increased, support is pretty much what you pay for. How much support can we expect for that 39 dollar router?

Cost?

I can agree that if they sold 1 router for $39 it would seem not much but when you sell tens of thousands at $39 and you have them made in China for about $2 there is enough there for some decent tech support.

Thanks

Doesn't work that way.

The bean counters don't let this happen and to compete, you reduce the price by 2 bucks and put 2 cents more to your web support pages.

Products are no longer bundled with live support at these prices.
