Best way to shut down Anti Virus

Mar 6, 2004 1:27PM PST

Windows ME and Windows 98SE - Norton Internet Security 2003

Every time I want to add a new application, when it starts to install, they always tell you to close all open programs and to shut down your Anti Virus program. I don't see anything in the Norton user's guide that addresses how to shut down Norton Internet Security so you can install a new application. Then how do you restart the anti virus program after you have finished the installation?

Have a look at the icon in your systray - rightclick on it - you see "disable" ??

Shutting down open progs seems ok.

Shutting down your AV may not be wise.

I leave my AV running and so far have not seen an issue.

If I ever do have an issue with the AV interferring with an install I'll make darn sure to scan the install files before I turn the AV off.

Thanks everyone for your help. I know there have been times when I have forgotten and left programs on while installing new programs and never had a problem. But I know there are some programs that insist that if you leave an anti virus program on while doing the install there will be problems. Just wanted to know in case.

Thanks again.

The AV is mostly a problem if drivers are part of the install.
I just down load to a folder in my docs, right click to scan with AV and after all clear turn off AV for install. As I recall from my Norton days (Now AVG free), it was best to go right into Norton center an "Unload" Norton buy >options>auto protect> and then unload auto protect. It asked " do you wish to unload now ?" Click yes, then install. Don't forget to reverse the process. Mine was 2002 version so method may be slightly easier now. Main point is the Auto Protect unload as it otherwise would be running in background still. Always worked well. HTH ! Grin

I have a great free program called enditall installed. Whenever you want to install a new program, you can select end it , or kill it!
Works a treat!
Search for it on google.
