Question

Best way to extend wifi in 3500 sq foot home?

Nov 22, 2018 1:32AM PST

I have a 3500 sq foot house that's a one-level, long, ranch style home. Our AT&T router is at one far end of the house and the bedrooms are on the other end (not my design!). I have an extender set up to boost the wifi for us in the bedrooms, but it's not doing to trick. My kids and I all want to stream Netflix or download at the same time it seems, and the signal isn't even strong enough for one device to stream without constantly buffering or losing the signal.

I'm not tech savvy! I've been reading about different routers to replace the one issued by AT&T Uverse and came across the Orbi and Eero mesh systems. I'd never heard of the mesh system before and I'm wondering if this could solve our problem. If you have any other suggestions for a none IT person, I'd love to hear it.

We use a Macbook Pro 2017, a gaming pc, a Dell PC, iPads and a Samsung tablet. I don't know if that matters! Thanks!

Answer
Relocate Router
Nov 22, 2018 10:49AM PST

It is best to relocate your modem/router to a more central location in your house. Since your AT&T router is at one far end of your house and the Internet is being used mainly on the opposite side of the house, Wifi connectivity could be weakened to an extent. You may want to consider putting your router at the half mark in terms of distance. Some cabling may need to be done. Also, some walls tend to block Wifi signals depending on the material used in the walling.

Cost?
Nov 22, 2018 11:15PM PST

Hi again, thanks for the reply. I assumed it would be expensive to have the wifi cable moved from its original place to a more central location. I think I'd have to pay AT&T to go under the house into the crawlspace to move it?

Also, we"ll be moving in a year, so was thinking it might be best to invest in a good router or mesh system that I could bring along.

Do you know how expensive it is to relocate the cable and router?

Varies with location.

But the cable company here regularly gives a cost of 100USD for a cable run.
