See here http://www.castlecops.com/t116539-Guide_Make_your_own_System_Security_Suite_for_Free.html
for the guide to make a very secure computer for free.
Here are my personal preferences

Its free, has the best detection of the freebee avs, has the best heuristics of the avs, and is the lightest

Kerio 2.1.5 or Kerio 4.2.3
The 2.1.5 is a very light no frills rule based packet filter with minimal outbound control
The 4.2.3 is a very strong and secure firewall iwth IDS, HIPS, etc. and is much better than ZoneAlarm free

Spybot S&D, Ad-aware SE, CWShredder, a-squared, ewido, WinPatrol, Spyware Blaster
The more you have the better. Spyware blaster is vital, and WinPatrol is an excellent, lightweight, free real-time monitor

Proxomitron with Grypen's filterset
Imagine doing whatever you want to a website to make it look better for yourself, eliminate ads, popups, browser holes, etc. This is what the Proxomitron is capable of doing
The MVPS host file prevents many bad sites and ads as well.

Try Free AVG, EWIDO and ... Zone Alarm.
