Best UV lens or polarizing lens (58mm) for new CANON S2 IS?

Mar 24, 2006 9:53AM PST

I've been looking online at the Hoya, Crystal Vision, Tiffen, B + W, and some other no-brands....

Does anyone have an opinion? I realize that an image is only as good as your optics... So is one brand better? Price isn't the only issue here.

Does it matter if i get the Canon lens adapter vs. another brand? I've heard of seizure issues with threads on some others.

I guess I would likely get a UV multi-coated lens, and maybe a polarizing (circular, since S2 is auto-focus?). Should I consider purchasing a lens set, like butterfly or b & h photo sites sell? Are these of great quality? I may want a lens hood as well... in the future.

I hope you can help. Thanks in advance for input.

This is a subject where few people agree.

The addition of a filter can cause lens flare when pointing the camera in the general direction of the sun. How the filter is coated can become a factor to remove/reduce lens flare. So can a lens hood.

To get a good look at what is available, I suggest you go to www.porters.com and have them send you their free 120 page catalog. The catalog has more information than their website.

I am using some of their "house brand" filters.
Called "Clear View", and am satisfied so far.

It would be safer to use the Canon brand lens adapter.

thx for the input... As joe (snapshot) says, there are many varying opinions when it comes to optics. I did look a lot at Porters, will get the catalogue. I've read mixed things about Hoya, but I think I'll end up with:

Heliopan or B + W UV multi-coated lens
(Most likely: B + W Digital Pro UV haze Multi-Coated lens#: 66-013863) $43

Heliopan or B + W Circular Polarizer lens
(Most likely B + W Digital Pro CP Multi-Coated Glass Filter#: 66017527) $115

Canon LAH-DC20 adapter & hood set $25

Canon PSC-75 camera bag $20
Wish I could get the DCC-90 bag from overseas though.

Prolly also get Giottos 1.8" LCD screen protectors, since LCD seems to get finger oil on it very very easily. $6

DO I NEED the WIDE ANGLE circ polarizer lens?
Might hold off on polarizer for now.

UV lens, adapter set, bag total is about $110 with shipping from Adorama. That seems like a great start at an affordable price. Adding the Polarizer is another $120.

Seem like a good start? I am extremely pleased with early snaps from my S2 IS. Right now, I'm not planning to get a tele or wide angle lens, but who knows? Maybe I will, or maybe I'll upgrade to the S3 and THEN get more lenses/filters... same threads and all.
