Best USB 2.0 flash drive and hub?

Jan 20, 2005 1:39AM PST

I have a new computer and want to get a couple of accessories.

What is the best flash drive? I'd like it to be sturdy and preferably lack parts which are easy to lose.

I also need a 4-7 port hub but there are so many available. Is any one better than the others?

Thanks very much!

USB memory sticks are commodities now, I think. The only part to lose is the protection cap, but you wouldn't want it to come without one either, I think.

However, except the amount of Mb (128-512 mostly) you can choose for a color or a size you like, or consider if and how often and how you want to transport it (on your keyring or a pocket of your jacket or in a ladies bag).

No experience with hubs. But there are internal (on a disk drive position) or external. And active (with their own power supply) and passive (using the power supplied by the USB connection). And most are 4 ports, but they can be chained.
Better share what you want to do with it.

Uses

Thanks for your reply.

The flash drive I want to use to carry the latest version of the documents I am working on between work, school, and home. I prefer to carry it on a keychain.

The hub is to attach peripherals (printer, MP3 player, palm pilot, USB flash drive) to my desktop. I was envisioning an external hub - should I get a powered one for these uses?

Most of the flash drives are very similar in construction and will take a lot of abuse, but be careful about carrying them on a keychain. They aren't indestructable. Last week, I bought a Sandisk 256 MB version for $19.99 after rebates and discounts. You'll need to decide on the memory requirements. I have seen them in 1 GB sizes. Here's a link to an extremely "tough" version of the Sandisk flash drives, but it will be more expensive than the "Cruzer Mini" I bought:

As far as the HUB is concerned, I don't think you'll need the powered HUB but make sure to read the specs for each device, just to be sure. As with your other request, there are lots available, but the one at the link below should do ya.

Hope this helps.
