Best Type of DVD and CD Media?

Nov 4, 2006 12:52AM PST

My new PC came with a 16x DVD +- RW drive. I went to buy some blank DVDs and CDs, but I didn't know what type to purchase.

The store had DVD+R and DVD-R for sale. What are the pros and cons of each?

Also, there were two types of CD-Rs -- 700mb and 800mb. I guess I should buy the 800mb because they hold more??? Any reason not to buy the 800mb size?

Thanks!

The CDR FAQ writes about the CD media.
"Subject: [7-2] Does the media matter?
(2001/07/16)

Yes. There are four factors to consider:

1. Does it work with your recorder?
2. Which CD readers can use it?
3. How long does it last before it starts to decay?
4. What's the typical BLER (BLock Error Rate) for the media?"
The complete reading is at http://www.cdrfaq.org/

"Note that computer storage media often becomes technically obsolete within 20 to 30 years, long before it physically deteriorates. In other words, before the media becomes unviable it may become difficult or impossible to find equipment that can read it."
