Question

Best Steaming Device for Hotels

Jan 14, 2015 4:37AM PST

I bought a Fire Stick but it doesn't work in hotels because it doesn't have a browser to clear through the access window. I hear the same is true of the Chromecast and Roku Stick. Is there a device out there that does work in hotels?

I travel a lot for work and this would be huge. Thanks so much!

Are you referring to the 'tv services' menu?

Like what most hotels have on their TVs(?) That's the pressing issue. Of late, few hotels aren't locked down as such, so picking another stick won't help if you can't override the default port.

I have however heard of special requests for HDTV displays being placed in customers rooms, to extend laptops, etc., apart from the standard issue fixed room TV. That will cost you though, and some hotels would provide this in advance for a nice fee IME. Most will just point you to their conference rooms though. YMMV.

Hmm

Sounds like there really isn't a good way of accessing netflix etc on a hotel TV. I guess computer or tablet is about all we're going to do right now.

Amazon is still talking about a way to get around it (eventually a brower on their stick) but I don't think it'll actually happen.

no, wifi

I don't think the OP is referring to the TV services menu. I think he or she is referring to the inability to log onto the wifi, since most hotels (well, most public wifi anywhere) requires you to go through a login page, click "I agree", etc.

That may be true, but...

...if you spend much time in hotels, the HDTVs have most of their ports locked down. Browser login won't even be relevant until the port is even open. Why let the casual user use their own (cheaper) system when they can rope them in for 10x the price? Wink

No devices will work in hotels due to the fire wall settings the only way you can check with the hotel admin whether they can open up the ports for the device you have so that you can make use of it

(NT) I don't think that's true.
