Resolved Question

Best security for a an ipnoe 5

Mar 20, 2015 12:29AM PDT

My grand daughter is going to California in June with a high school group. She's 15 and she has lost one and the other iphone she ran over with a piano(don't ask). She had to save and replace both of these. I'm not sure how much responsibility that taught her. Anyway I'm looking for a security device that would alert her when she lays it down or can't find it and might also detect where it is. I'm not very savvy in this area and was hoping you all might have suggestions. If it were me I'd get her a Trac Phone instead to take but she of course can't live without her iphone 5. Any help would be very appreciated!

Sounds like more personal responsibility is needed most

There's really nothing that can fix either losing a phone or damaging a phone beyond repair.

Even if it is stolen while she's on the school trip and utilizes the built-in Apple 'find my phone' feature, usually the criminals are savvy enough now to wipe the device to disable that feature for quick resale. That's really your only option for that particular scenario- hoping you encounter a less tech-inclined criminal. The 'devices' <ahem> that alert you to setting a phone down (etc.) are either too cumbersome or way too 'rube goldberg' for me to really recommend for anyone in a practical real-world application. Teach her to keep phone in pocket at all times.

Otherwise, I would encourage you to put your foot down and tell her to leave it home and take along the dumb phone for emergencies.

I agree!

I agree with you...she def needs to leave it at home but her parents make that decision. You'd think after having to pay for her own phones she would have learned. She's a straight A Honor roll student and responsible in most all other ways. This just seems to be one big "gray" area.I'm going to talk to her parents about an alternative. She actually did have the last one in her pocket at school. She was helping the band leader to push a piano and didn't realize her phone had fallen out. Therefore it was crushed. Thank you! I know you are right. I may just get her a Trac Phone for her birthday in May!

1. http://www.cnet.com/products/zomm-wireless-leash/
It's not as expensive as it was in the review and now there are a few others. Google: IPHONE WIRELESS LEASH

2. Frankly the cheap exit is to not replace it with an iPhone. I picked up an android for far less which is working out well in spite of the lesser known name.

a. The MotoG is on sale today at http://www.amazon.com/Motorola-Moto-Universal-Unlocked-White/dp/B00K0NS0P4/ref=cnet
b. The current #1 at http://www.amazon.com/gp/bestsellers/wireless/2407749011/ref=pd_zg_hrsr_cps_1_2_last looks OK with the Samsung Mini. It has the usual 1GB RAM, 8GB flash that avoids a common issue with lower numbers. It's well under 90 bucks.

You didn't supply what carrier it is but ATT/Tmobile and you might be able to slide the SIM card over.

3. They burned 2 iPhones so now it's time to go cheaper.

Great!

I will definitely check these out. Her dad got a new phone so he let her get an iphone once she had enough money. You'd think the kid would keep up. She does in about everything else that involves being responsible. Course her parents make the decisions about the phones. She worked and saved her money and had money she had gotten for birthdays and Christmas...maybe she'll keep track of the thing and maybe not. I will look in to this and I appreciate the ideas too! I think they have ATT. Not like the olden days when I was a teenager....I never had a phone extension even in my room and to be sure any misbehavior cut off all communication by way of the telephone. That got my attention. Thanks again!!

don't forget to make sure that the security code, 4 numbers, is activated on her iPhone.

Slows down the wipe artists

If the iPhone is lost or stolen, it can be remotely shut down & locked.
It can also be wiped of all personal data.

All using the "Find my Phone" feature

Exactly

My friend's older brother got in hot water monopolizing the landline back in the day. I remember his dad simply barging downstairs (while we were watching TV from the beanbag chairs) to snip the phone wires leading to the teenager's room. Things were easier back then(!) ROTFL Wink

Find my phone is about the best you can do. Hopefully she's learned from her mistake and will be more responsible.
