Best could be Cisco, that Apple airport extreme w/ Airtunes

The rest of us use Dlink, Linksys, Netgear without a hitch. Almost everyone gets to download/install latest firmware and drivers even on new boxes.

But you wrote best so that moves us to the Cisco and Apple units that you don't see often.

Linksys products are fine for a typical home, you can get them for $40.The new one's are compatible with b+g wireless systems.

What Dlink, Linksys, Netgear units you see on the shelf could be a fine choice.

save your money

and spend it on something that really matters like RAM, a cd burner to backup your data, or a slave harddrive(hdd). like what was suggested Dlink, Linksys and Netgear do a great job espescially during a sale week and try a rebate
if you don't mind waiting for what seems to be eternity.
as far as speed goes....if your using dail-up, use your money on DSL or cable if available. if you mean speed within the router get ready to pay.
