Best quality video from ZR400

Mar 13, 2006 9:32AM PST

I'm am using the Canon ZR400 to record digital video and I am importing it using Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5. I can edit the film and export it to dvd, but the picture looks a little grainy and the framerate isn't always perfect. What settings can be used for the best quality video? I have a huge hard drive, so space really isn't an issue.

grainy DVD's
Mar 14, 2006 6:01AM PST

sorry I can't offer a solution-I'm having the same problem...crystal clear and brilliant color on tape, but poor quality after captured to the computer. (ZR700 and Sony TRV280) If you find the solution, please pass it on if you can. Thank you.

But may I ask...regarding DVD creation, I captured 28 min, or 93MB, and the DVD creation turned it into 2.3GB! And it took forever. Is that normal? (I'm new to digital video.)

grainy video

If I find anything out I will let you know. I had the same issue with the incredibly large file size video. That is part of what I am confused about. If the video is that huge, why doesn't it look any better? I'll keep you posted.

Not capturing right
Mar 18, 2006 10:25PM PST

When you capture from your digital camcorder to the computer, unless you have a DVD camcorder, the captured file should be about 13 GB per hour. A 28 minute tape should then be about 6 GB. If your capture is under 100MB, then you are not capturing correctly. Are you using the firewire port ? Are you capturing at full resolution ?

capturing resolution

Bill,
Sorry for the delay. Thought there wasn't an answer in my future! Your info was extremely helpful. With that 13GB/hr capture rate, can you fit about 20 minutes on a DVD (for a standard DVD player)?? What program(s) would you recommend to burn it? I have Roxio My DVD Essentials 8 and Pinnacle Studio v10, but I haven't used either one much. Thank you again.

Large files...
Apr 30, 2006 4:23PM PDT

Thanks for the info. The video files that I capture ARE pretty big, some are several gigs. The recording options on the camera are not very specific, just SP or LP. I obviously want SP for it's better quality. I've got a lot of various options for capturing with Premiere and I choose the ones that have the highest framerate, widescreen, etc. Maybe I'm just expecting too much of the camera, but I know that I have seen analog video cameras with better quality and I feel like the ZR400 has the capability to do much more.

Any updates

I just searched and found this thread. Although it is old, did anyone find any answers? I also have a ZR400 and use Premiere. Were you able to get the video to look any better on dvd?
