Best Quality Pocket-Sized 8 MP Camera?

by troyskott / March 28, 2006 12:59 AM PST

I have a dilemma. I'm looking for the camera that will get me the best quality pictures and prints up to poster size, if possible. What I keep forgetting as I'm looking is that the main reason I'm replacing my Canon G2 is its size. What I really need is a camera that I can take with me everywhere in my pocket without it being plainly obvious that it's there. But everytime I start looking and reading reviews, my eyes keep being drawn to the Canon S80, which seems like it's too big to meet my requirements. What cameras would everyone suggest for someone in my position, where camera size is the primary factor, followed closely by picture quality?

Thanks for your help.

I understand what cameras are available, but I was hoping someone could give me the expert advice on which cameras best combine small size and high quality.

The smaller the camera

The more comprimises you have to make. The smallest cameras suffer from a narrow field of view. That is because they have to make smaller lenses. I think that if size verses quality is an issue, the S80 is just fine. At that size you stop worrying about features and mp. Go check them out at a camera store.
When you get very small, it is hard to take a pic without shake so it is best to just get a feel for the camera.

You don't need a 8MP to print quality poster size prints..

It may be better to think about the number of horizontal

and vertical pixels rather than megapixels. My camera's most detailed setting will capture 3,504 pixels horizontally and 2,336 pixels vertically for about 8.2 megapixels. Many would agree that a quality image, if printed, needs at least 150 pixels per inch. Therefore, the maximum sized, quality print that it can make is 23.4 inches by 15.6 inches. To go above that size, I would need to let Photoshop, in my case, build a more detailed image by using interpolation. There is definitely a limit to how much larger an image could be interpolated before causing a serious degradation in quality.

there are some more to pick from...IMHO

it's obvious that there is bias in the list to pick from..not one Sony product...and there are quality pocket size Sony cameras also...so do some research and don't take anything as the absolute truth...you decide with some good information what will be the best for you....

A suggestion

Look at the SD series Canon cameras.

The SD700 is 3.5 x 2.2 x 1 in, if thats about as small as I would go. The SD700 hasnt shipped yet but there are the previous models to that unit which are out there, they dont come in 8mp. Read up at dpreview and see which SD they suggest.

5mp is about the smallest I would go for printing 8x10 photos.

Help, my PC with Windows 10 won't shut down properly

Since upgrading to Windows 10 my computer won't shut down properly. I use the menu button shutdown and the screen goes blank, but the system does not fully shut down. The only way to get it to shut down is to hold the physical power button down till it shuts down. Any suggestions?
