Question

Best quality hookup for Receiver/DVD/Cable Box

May 17, 2011 4:29AM PDT

I have a Samsung Reciever with a built-in DVD player, a time warner HDTV cable box, and will be getting a new LCD or Plasma HDTV with at least two HDMI inputs. What is the best way to connect these three devices with the best sounding audio and best quality video? The receiver is a 5.1 system and the television will be at a minimum 720p quality. I have several of the necessary cables such as two HDMI cables, an optical cable, and the speaker wires. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Clarification Request
what audio Inputs for the Rcvr?

I usually hook up differently.

STB(cable box) > TV > receiver.

DVD > TV

Your receiver has the DVD built in, so you just need to send video to the TV via HDMI.

If you run audio to your receiver from the STB, and a separate video cable to the TV you will very likely have lip sync issues due to newer LED/LCD TV's buffering the video.

If your receiver only has analog audio in (red and white), then the whole process becomes even more complicated.

If it has digital audio in (co-ax (orange or black) or optical), it should be very easy. Just be sure of the input, and confirm the TV you get has that particular audio OUT put.

Good luck,
Jim

You have to answer the best part.

Most have learned to connect up HD like this.

Source -> Receiver -> speakers and HDTV

In some cases you need an optical cable from the HDTV back to the Receiver.

Sadly there must be many other hookups but I use this over and over. However I rarely write a tutorial or much more about it. Try that first.
