Prices

I like newegg.com, except that they charge tax in my state. zipzoomfly.com has become my vendor of choice.
dell.com sometimes has good buys on peripherials.

Comp. cost
Apr 22, 2005 11:49AM PDT

I put my comp together last August. The price then, including a 19" monitor, was about $1900. I used a full tower Antec server case (for cooling purposes), an Asus A8V Deluxe MB, Athlon64 3500 939 pin cpu, 2x512meg Kingston Value Ram, a WD 160 ata HD that I already had on hand, and an NEC 8x dual layer DVD drive. I skimped a little on the graphics card, using an Nvidia 5200 w/256meg (I'm not a gamer). The Asus MB should be upgradable to the coming Athlon64 dual core processors with just a BIOS upgrade. I've since added a a Seagate 80 gig SATA hd--$65--as my "C" drive.

It does a good job at video editing and handling large files, but I am going to upgrade my graphics card soon. I don't know if this matters, but WinXP loads in less than 30 sec from power on.

You should be able to duplicate my system for well less than $1400 at today's prices.

Have a ball!

EBay?

I have to admit that I have not even begun to build my own machine and know very little of where to shop for cheap componants (boy, that should create some confidence in my comments ha ha).

BUT

Right or Wrong I am a huge Ebay fan, at least for some things. Might be worth at least checking them out as well. May be hit or miss on the price, but if you pay attention to the feedback ratings of the sellers and find a good price I have found the majority of the time you can't go wrong.

This is not even close to a good example of all the possible savings, but instead is just one small one, but I did just by a Dell Desktop. Everything seemed like a good price except the $30.00 printer cable. So I got everything but that, went to ebay and found a NEW 10 ft. USB printer cable for $0.79 plus $1.99 shipping - less than $3.00!!! Again, not tons of $$$, but not bad..

Anyway, always worth a shot. Of course, some larger componants like mother board and processor you may wnat to check out return policies, and post purchase suport may be quite limited, but still a thought
