Best player for my specific needs?

Jan 24, 2005 2:05AM PST

Hi, I'm looking for an MP3 player than can best meet the following criteria:

- 20-40 GB
- on-the-fly playlists (not connected to PC)
- easy to use interface
- good battery life (replaceable battery ideal)
- audible support (not necessary, but nice)
- shows up as a drive letter on PC (ideal but not absolutely required)
- in-line remote would be ideal - i.e., one that plugs in between the player and the headphones

Also, do any of the current crop of MP3 players have a speaker?

Price is secondary to getting all the features I'm looking for.

Your recommendations would be GREATLY appreciated - thanks!

Maggie

Best Player for My Specific Needs
Jan 24, 2005 2:32PM PST

Hey,

I've been shopping and exploring these little devices for some time myself. One of the biggest frustrations is that all of the features you listed are not on any one player. But between the 20gb, available remote, easy interface and audible.com support, I might look at the Samsung YH-920GS http://reviews.cnet.com/Samsung_Napster_YH-920GS_20GB/4505-6490_7-31232892.html

It may not have the best battery life, but it seems to be a solid all-around choice.

From my research on the different features, (In the 20gb range) The Creative Zen Touch has the best sound quality and the longest battery life, and the Apple IPod 4th Generation is by far the easiest to use. I hope this helps, and good luck!

Zen Touch

It sounds like the Zen Touch would be good for you. It comes in 20 or 40 GB models. The user interface is easy to use. It has a 24 hour battery life. I'm not sure about Audible support.

Zen Touch vs. Archos Gmini 400?
Jan 24, 2005 11:10PM PST

Thank you both! I appreciate your suggestions.

A friend also recommended the Archos Gmini 400. The nice color screen and everything else are just bonuses, but it does seem to do most of what I'm looking for. Any thoughts on how it compares vs. the Zen Touch?

Many thanks in advance for your suggestions and input!
