General discussion

best monitor for reading / writing

Sep 25, 2010 1:16AM PDT

Hi !
I am looking to buy an inexpensive monitor but am just bewildered by the sheer variety on display at the stores.
The primary purpose is to hook up the monitor with my laptop. This way I should find it more comfortable to do my writing and reading work. Other than this I will be surfing the internet and watching movies.
I am open to suggestions here but I think that I should get a monitor with a matte screen. Also I quite dislike those wide screen monitors which seem to be the only ones being shipped nowadays. I would like to go for 17" (or maybe 19") one with squarish dimensions. e.g. some of the basic lenovo ThinkVision monitors.
Would it be good idea to go for used deals ? And if yes, where ?
Thanks!

The......"soup of the day"

is wide screen.

You can go to any local merchant....grab one off the shelf....bring it home and try it.

If you don't like it.....bring it back.

If you go non standard.....square screen/matte finish....it's mail order.

Your call.

BTW....wide screen will grow on you and I suspect movies will fit better.

best monitor for reading / writing ? II
Sep 25, 2010 4:56AM PDT

thanks bob,
i can sort of get along with the 16:10 widescreens. but i quite dislike the newer ones which are 16:9 ! they are just too wide for my purposes.

e.g. if i writing an essay in word or reading a pdf article all the vertical space is sacrified at the expense of horizontal space. this means that i have to scroll much more.

the regular old style monitor would seem to be a better bet in this regard.

dunno why the companies decided to take them off in the first place.

so what say now ?
