Excellent Linux distro for Athlon 64
Apr 2, 2005 4:45PM PST

Hi "subechivas",
My 64 bit Athlon experience is limited to Fedora core 3. It is excellent, i.e. I have not experienced any problems at all, once I uninstalled the latest kernel update.
Cheers

OP is not a true AMD fan
Apr 3, 2005 3:06AM PDT

If he/she were a real AMD fan, he/she would be so proud of the machine that the OS would make no difference.
That said, many people who don't need the latest frills are happy with the SuSE 8 versions with upgrades, so you could go anywhere from SLES8 to SuSE 9.3 and be happy.
If you went red hat, you would want EL3_U3 or newer (including EL4), if you could afford them.

The full up Suse 9.2 helps in partitioning and more. Almost a press the return key install.

Windows upgrade still requires preparation
Apr 3, 2005 4:37PM PDT

SuSE has got so good at automatic dual boot setup that Red Hat has had to partly match it. I believe it is still advisable to have defragmented your Windows partition prior to asking SuSE install to shrink it, and it can't be shrunk by as much as 50% because of the placement of the system files in XP NTFS. If you are installing Windows yourself, leaving the desired unpartitioned space for linux takes care of that. Even better to install Windows on a 2nd partition, leaving the C: partition to preserve the Windows dual boot setup and share files between Windows and linux (with low security).
The catch comes when you upgrade or maybe repair your Windows, as you surely must do eventually. The free trial 64-bit Windows RC2 over-wrote MBR, same as the 32-bit versions have done. Saving the NTLDR compatible linux boot sector for re-installation after Windows upgrade saves a lot of grief there.

tim43, what do you base that on?
Apr 3, 2005 9:32PM PDT

Here I recently installed Suse 9.0, 9.1, 9.2 and all setup an automatic dual boot with no work at all on my part.

What did they do wrong?

Be specific.

Same here,

with Red Hat and Mandrake(5 different builds). But I knew enough to partition and leave an empty partition for Linux first. Only trouble I ever had was trying to load Fedora Core 3 in a dual-boot with 98se. Turns out it requies NT based Windows. chuck
