Answer
So it is value or how good it games?

The 970m models should be the better gamers. And with similar specs and a price range of 938 to 975, I'd see which has a better warranty. 1 year is for those that can afford OOW (out of warranty) repairs.

There is an issue with 17 inch models. These are never a good choice for college students. Why has been beat out before.

For what I'll be doing, I don't think I'll need the best GPU. And I think any future upgrades in RAM and HDD/SSD will be cheaper than spending now.

(NT) So why not the cheapest?

don't know

originally my thought was the cheapest, but with so many options my brain starts to hurt. That's why I came one here to find out if some of the other options might be slightly better for the money. I don't know enough about laptops to make the call myself. Too many questions, like, is it worth it to pay more for the new 5700HQ? or is the 860M a horrible graphics card and that's why it's so cheap? or Asus vs MSI, is it just preference?

The 860m may be horrible for say gamers.

But the 750m, while a gen older and model less did great for so many that would it be "bad"? I'll answer no.

As to brand, I have to get the machine in person to see if I can live with it. That is, I type a lot so a good keyboard and display is important. These are personal items so I head out to stores to see and touch these areas.
