Best HD Upconverting DVD player...is it worth it?

Sep 24, 2005 8:12AM PDT

Hi All,

I am considering buying a upconverting DVD player. What is the best one out there? What should I be considering? Is it even worth it? Thanks!

Whether or not upconverting players provide better PQ is a topic of some debate. I've seen posts from people who suggest that PQ enhancements are possible with fixed-pixel display units (plasma, LCD, etc.). Even then, it may depend upon the electronics of your specific components; monitor and player. It becomes a matter of what's the best player for your particular set-up. That is, would your monitor do a better job of upconverting signals (if you have an HD monitor w/ scaling capability) or would the new player.

Some of the brands that have received varying degrees of positive reviews include, OPPO, Denon, and Samsung. There are others, however.

You may want to repost your question listing other components in your system so respondents with similar equipment can respond in greater detail.

Just as an FYI, I have a Samsung HD850 and a Westinghouse LTV-32w1. While the Samsung is a much better player than the one it replaced (an old APEX), it did not deliver much improvement in PQ because of decent electronics in my monitor.

I had a real nasty d.v.d. picture with my sony progressive scan d.v.d. player using componit vidio cables, to my new 65" sony hi-def t.v. so I spent another $500 on a Denon player no help Well I replaced my denon with the 2900 denon with d.v.i. output, set the player to 1080 and bought a gifin d.v.i. switcher now both my d.v.d and hi-def satellite picture is awsome actually the d.v.d looks almost hi-def good luck stewart norrie

So far what I can tell you is I use a Pioneer Elite 45a Model, hooked up to a 34 sony XBR, but the dvd player is pricey. Its not a upconverter but it will blow 98% of them out of the water.
