As Bob said, compression kills the video quality... I would keep the format in which you originally recorded the footage. If you need to compress those video files for storage, you could try something like Zip or some other compression that doesn't alter the actual files.
And be sure to keep multiple backup copies. Keep a copy on an external hard drive, burn it to Blu-ray or DVD or CD as well. If you only have one backup copy, there's a possibility you could lose it.
Unfortunately, we don't have any kind of permanent storage media yet.
