best external hard drive?

Jun 22, 2006 2:25AM PDT

I've been looking for an external hard drive for my iBook G4...probably in the 160 gb range, and with a firewire connection. Ratings and reviews seem to be all over the place and pretty diverse. So far my top choice is a western digital- the dual option media center, but the mixed reviews are making me reluctant. Maxtor is another top choice and LaCie is up there too. Does anyone have any personal experience with any of these/have any advice?

Thanks!

Sorry.

But you may be missing the long Maxtor discussions on the forums. I wonder if its because it's popular or if there is a real problem.

I will write the many consider (my opinion disagrees) such as "storage" or backup but it's still a hard disk with all the issues that any hard disk comes with. The contents no matter what make are at risk so a backup plan is still required.

I write sorry because I don't own such except the units I built mytself. That is, I bought a hard disk, enclosure and put the 2 parts together. I'm wondering if I ever should try a ready made unit.

I imagine that if building my own hard drive were an option for me I would not have posted. The other discussions I read did not seem to offer the kind of information I was looking for. I understand that the contents of any hard drive are always at risk.

Why is this not an option?

No real skills beyond light bulb changing are required.

Well

The question I asked was which were the best. I did not ask how to or if I should build my own. Actually, I could. However, I was not inquiring about that subject. Thank you.

Don't know if you're still on the market, but I am in the same situation. I've got a iBook G4, and have just experienced my 160GB LaCie Firewire Porsche's demise. So, I'd forgo with the Porsche. I don't know much about the d2 series, but am told they are more sturdy. As for the Maxtor, I bought a OneTouch III 300GB, but took it back to the store when I realized the USB 2.0 part of it wasn't working on my iBook. Sent Maxtor an email, but didn't receive much in the way of help. I'm now toying with the idea of building my own, but also thinking of the Mercury series at OtherWorldComputing. Hope this helps.
