Best Edit Machine

I am looking for a great (not the most expensive) edit machine. Right now I have an XPS system but it is rather old and I did not know what to put into it when I did buy it. I am editting on the Premiere Pro edit system right now.
I know about the Apple machine with the Final Cut edit system but that is way too expensive for me. I am looking for a fast workhorse with good guts. I know its whats inside the machine that really counts like graphics card, speed,ram, and all those other things that go inside that make the difference, I just don't know much about them.
This is my first time on this forum and I know and respect your tested information. Does anyone have a good working knowledge of what to put into a good machine? Thanks for any and all info.
