Best DVD Player?

Feb 15, 2006 3:19AM PST

Hi Everyone:

I will be purchasing the new Sony R60XBR1 TV very soon. (I know that it can reproduce 1080p even though it doesn't have have a 1080p capable input). At the same time, I am going to be buying a new DVD player. What suggestions do you all have for now and for the future (HDDVD or BluRay) for under $400 (and preferable under $250)?

I was thinking of the Toshiba or the OPPO Digital. The Oppo, which is extremely well received, does NOT have a HDMI connection - only DVI - Please help! Thanks.

BONSPEED, could you please post your initial impressions on the S97S after you've had some time with it? I have recently recommended its little brother, the also excellent S77S to some people on this forum. Both units are on my short list.

I have read good things also about the OPPO player but they seemed to have had some reliability problems. Hear now they are starting to improve.

Thanks,

RR6

As far as I understand you don't get the same audio quality with the Panasonic, with the Denon the sound quality is much better. As for the Picture Quality yes, that it what I was told about two hours ago at J&R Music World by a sales person.

Best dvd player WITH HDMI
Feb 15, 2006 8:47AM PST

The Toshiba SD4980 (about 89.99) and SD5980 (about 139.99) BOTH have HDMI inputs and both upconvert to 720p/1080i. the 5980 comes with an HDMI cable and has SD/MS/FM inputs for upconverting digital photos. However, neither is an HDDVD player but there is nothing out there that is 1080p anyway. It should hold you over well until then.

Good luck

According to Hometheaterhifi.com

They rated the Oppo the best budget DVD player of 2005. So I'd go with that. It's only $199
