Toshiba products usually match Sony across the board for value at a lower price where they have an equivalent model (in notebooks, TV's DVD players, etc) and the quality is just as good. And, Bob is right about the Sony service being last for notebooks and desktops in both PC magazine and Consumer Reports (Sony quality is higher than that but their pricing is also higher and Toshiba came out above them in quality ).

A great thing HP has is a dedicated forum for this notebook that can answer all your questions and provide a community after the purchase. See zd7000forums.com -- you can get a $100 custom order rebate on any HP or Compaq notebook through 12/1/04 (see PDF file on HPshopping home page -- under mail in rebates -- don't use $50 one on order screen) and if you are a qualified college student you can get 6% more off through the APP program.

Here is the link to the $100 HP custom order rebate good through 12/1/04 on any HP notebook at HPshopping. There is a Compaq rebate as well with the same terms.

http://hpshopping.speedera.net/www.shopping.hp.com/shopping/pdf/rebate_choose_cool_hp.pdf

Note that after all the specific qualified prebuilt (retail) models listed it states HP configure to order PC's are included. That is any HP model ordered custom at the website. Use this instead of the $50 rebate listed on the order screen.

Go for the Toshiba P20

As far as I know, it's the only notebook out there (besides HP) with Windows Media Centre Edition. It packs a whopping 3.4Ghz, has 1GB of RAM, and has a GeForce 5700 with 128MB of dedicated video memory. It also has a DVD+/- Burner.

I personally like the Toshiba P20 and the HP zd7000 better. The Sony has shared video memory so that will take away from performance, and the Dell's look cheap to me so I don't like them. I have and HP notebook and I can tell you that HP has pretty good service through e-mail and something like Instant Messenging. Here is how I rate the notebooks in order from highest to lowest:
1. HP Pavilion zd7000
2. Toshiba Satellite P20
3. Dell Inspiron XPS
4. Sony Vaio K25
