Question

Best CPU for 1050ti 4Gb?

Jul 16, 2018 9:42AM PDT

Hi everyone!

Currently I have a budget build with an AMD FX-6300 and a 1050ti 4gb and 8GB DDR3 RAM

I'm looking for an upgrade since I know the FX platform is dead and is a time bomb just waiting to get obsolete. RAM doesn't help much either so you get the picture.

I'm really indecisive if going for a Ryzen upgrade The Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 5 2400g or just go with Intel and get an i5 8400

If you have better suggestions please do say so. I have very basic knowledge on PC building.

I want something with an upgrade path for the future that can still run smooth some 2018 games at medium-high settings.

Of course this means that I would need to upgrade the Mobo and the RAM as well, that's why I want to make the best choice.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I worry that the bump up won't be much.

And most of the work is still on the GPU so you may have wanted to hold out for the 1060/1070 unless you wanted to get into ($$$$) UHD 4K gaming.

WHY THE 2400G? https://www.anandtech.com/show/12425/marrying-vega-and-zen-the-amd-ryzen-5-2400g-review/5 has it barely holding its own against the paltry 1030. The CPU with the graphics will take a CPU hit as memory is accessed for graphic work. I can't see why anyone would get a 2400G.

Notice how the G models fall out as you go up the models at https://www.reddit.com/r/PCMasterRace/wiki/builds

Honestly I just want to have an upgrade path

The FX processor I have, as much useful it has been this past years is getting old. I'm watching it more and more in the "minimum" requirments for today's games.

I know the GPU ain't the big deal when compared to 4K Gaming but I know it can still give what it has for a little more time and I still want to game at least in 1280x720 for a while more.

My nod

Is to forget the G series of the CPU. Or just get into Intel models noted at the PCMR page.

Don't go with an apu if your planning on using a gpu.

It's just a waste of money.

That leaves you with the 1600 or the 8400.

Flip a coin.

Build it on paper with both cpu's and compare the price.
