Best Canon with shortest shot to shot lag time

Jun 6, 2008 1:01PM PDT

I'm looking to replace my Canon Powershot S50 with something that has a faster shot-to-shot time. I seem to miss every picture. I'm not saying I'm a great photographer, but I think a better camera will help. Happy I would like to stick with a Canon and this aspect is the number one priority for me. I don't really care about anything else. My SD50 has been great--a little heavier than I would like though, but still not a big complaint.

I'm looking in the up to $400 range. I'll mostly be taking pics of my kids, parties, etc. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Melissa

might help

This is from's Steves digicams: Canon A720IS

"Performance was very robust for a camera in this class, outdoing previous models. It captured its first image after startup in just 1.9 seconds. The shutter delay was less than 1/10 of second when pre-focused and just 4/10 of second when allowing the camera to focus. In normal mode, the camera was able to capture a shot every 1.2 seconds and approx. every 5 seconds when using the flash, slightly varying depending on the distance to the subject and battery life. When shooting in burst mode, I was able to get 2.1 fps for 10 seconds, this exceeds the 1.9 fps that Canon specifies. Burst mode also works with the flash, capturing 9 shots in just 10.3 seconds, coming up just short of 1 fps. All of these tests were performed using an A Data Turbo MMC plus 200x 2GB memory card, ISO auto, flash off and all other settings on the factory defaults unless otherwise noted. Times may vary depending on lighting conditions, camera settings, media, etc."

And it's the same size camera as the S50.

mistake above

I wish you could edit posts here. It's not the A720IS up there, it's the A470. Also, if you want faster than that it would take about an $80 increase in your budget to get the G9. It's better in every aspect, but you would have to decide if it would be worth the jump in price.

I disagree

First off i would like to say that, yes, the canon G9 is really good. IT has a solid build and a high optical zoom. But, by what I've read and seen it's not the fastest. One of the faster ones i've found happens to be the canon SD870. It has a fast turn on rates and one of the fastest shot to shot speeds I've seen for the series. now my problem with it is that the on/off switch is close to the shot button. Also the shot mode controls are kind of funny. I'm personally Interested in the canon SD790. It seems almost as fast as the 870, but I'm not sure scenes there's no reviews.

From Steves again

"Our shooting performance results indicate the G9 is very responsive. From power up to first image captured measured just 1.6 - 1.7 seconds."

"Using the standard continuous capture mode, I was able to capture 10 frames in just 5.4 seconds, surpassing Canon's claim of 1.5fps. Continuous Shooting AF mode captured 10 frames in approx. 9.7 seconds, acquiring focus for each individual shot."

The G9 is faster than the SD870 in shot to shot. Look at Steves for the review, not much faster but is faster.
