best camcorder under 1000 dollars

I'm planning on buying a camcorder fo my dad for christmas. I'm looking for one under $1000 dollars. Right now he has a Sony DCR-PC110 (But I broke it making movies). So I'm Buying a Sony HDR-FX1 in place of this but I realized this camera is a little to big to be carring around for home videos and on vacations. So I was wondering your opinion on what i should buy him.
