best camcorder to buy

Hi I'm looking for the best camcorder to buy to record a dance show. I need it to pick up the sound well and also need to put the end result onto a disc. I'm not very technical so the easier the better to use. Can anyone recommend any please? I'm not looking at paying the earth as will only use it a few times a year

Keep in mind folk have asked such before.

But with no budget limit I have to think many details were left out. Many folk forget lighting or learn why we can't trust onboard mics. So my advice is go simple.

Look at the best sellers on amazon and stay in the top 10.

If you want to go pro you'll get more gear such as lighting rigs and more audio gear.

As to technical, you can learn editing and more as you go.

I need it to pick up the sound well

Herein lies the problem. To video a dance show, you need to be back from the action. To capture the sound well you need to be close to the sound source.
Many of us use an audio recorder for the sound and then sync with the video in a video editor.
The alternative would be to use a mic connected to the external mic socket on the camera (the more expensive ones usually have a mic input) but this normally needs long leads or a wireless mic.
Sometimes you can pick up the sound from a sound system and you would need an attenuator to feed a line signal into the mic on the camera.

And there is more...

If we assume you are a dancer - or at least know one - you know there is "practice, practice, practice."

You said, "will only use it a few times a year"... but the *best* path forward is to get to know the equipment you are using so you can provide the "best quality"... unless you are expecting to set the camcorder at the back of the room, press record and have only the static shot of the entire stage.

Honestly, does that really seem visually interesting to you?

Assuming you set a budget - per R. Proffit's great suggestion, be sure to include a tripod, case for the camcorder, and consider an optional high-capacity rechargeable battery from the camcorder manufacturer.

And if you go with Terfyn's great advice, you will need a mic-stand and handle adapter to mount that audio recorder to the mic stand...Synchronizing the externally captured audio with the audio captured by the camcorder is not difficult after you have done it a few times (remember, "practice")...

As with dancing, basketball, football, math... and videography and editing... practice, practice, practice...
