RE: DON'T BUY FROM KULLY
May 20, 2005 9:17AM PDT

Stop recommending Kully! The company is far from reputable. YOu can build the machine yourself, if not you can get the same from a more respectable company such as monarch, velocitymicro, hypersonic, ibuypower, etc.

actually ibuypower shouldn't be recomended
May 20, 2005 9:33AM PDT

a few members on cnet have had serious issues with ibuypower
so i'd be weary to recomend it

Kully ?

Whats kully ? I'm sorry I don't understand you, and yea I apreccate the recommandations ,but I don't have a credit card. There for I can't order off line, and even the sites that allow money orders. I wouldn't be able to ,because my mom has a phobia of ordering things off of the internet.

Going to the site argusg recommended

it's kully with a different url. He recommended the company before. I won't be surprised if he runs that site and is trying to get some free publicity...

Yes a good buy ......

IMO to include a 17'' LCD Flat Scree Gateway monitor & printer for $700. What model is the LCD?

The Ofice Depot site shows that model 508GE at $800 without a monitor or printer. It does have the higher end Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA 900), but also has a PCI-Express x16 slot for adding that 'special' GeForce 6600GT PCI-e video card. Note it also has a 1x PCI slot The sound may already be ok without another card.

It is a Intel series 5xx which means it doesn't have the new Intel 64-bit technology(EM64T). Gateway, HP, Dell, emachine, and others will probably be giving good buys on the Intel series 5xx computers to make way for the series 6xx computers with EM64T, and now with the new dual core 8xx series with EM64T.

Dont forget to research companies

AMD processors are often faster than the equivelant intel cpu. Ever wonder why a 1.8GHz athlon 64 beats a 3.0GHz pentium 4 processor? But it usually depends on what you're using your computer for. I can design a 700 dollar computer like that one except better :-D

Yes, I do research and

I know about AMD and Intel very well.

In this case the 17" LCD makes this a good buy.

I'd go with the 6600 GT...

I just replied to another thread that Future Film Director started, but here it is again since this thread seems to be more active...

You'll want to read this article: http://reviews.cnet.com/4520-8902_7-6213103.html I also just purchased a Gateway 508GE for $569($599 - $30off coupon) from Office Depot a couple days ago. I am going to pick up an Nvidia GeForce 6600GT based PCI-Express card that can be found for around $170 on the net based on the CNet recommendation for most bang for the buck.

The 508GE is a great deal at $569. All of the other retailers (Best Buy, Circuit City, CompUSA) carry the Gateway 507GR for $700 and it appears to be identical to the 508GE except for the 507GR having a slower CPU (3Ghz P4 530). Why pay over $100 more for a slower CPU?

This is the first time that I have ever purchased a prebuilt PC. In the past I have typically upgraded my PC part by part in 2 year cycles. It would be difficult to put together a PC with these specs including OS and software for the same price.

Using prices from www.pricewatch.com...
$250 P4 540 CPU & MB
$30 512MB PC3200 DDR
$110 200GB SATA HD
$70 Decent Case, Powersupply,Memory card reader
$50 16X DL DVD+-RW
$20 16X DVD-ROM
$10 Modem
$87 WinXP Home OEM
$37 MS Works 2005 OEM
$20 Keyboard, mouse, speakers
------------------------------
$684 Total for ''Cheap'' 508GE clone PC

Strange thing about my 508GE... I noticed that the BIOS and Windows detects the CPU as a 3.4Ghz and not 3.2Ghz as stated on the box. Maybe I somehow got P-4 550 in mine instead of a P-4 540? Anyone else with a 508GE seen this?
