Question

Belkin Router disconnects from internet if wifi radio is on

Dec 14, 2016 11:48AM PST

So, I've got a Belkin F9K1105 v3 (01) dual band router. My cable ISP had a node outage for a few hours then came back up. When it did, all of a sudden my router is having issues. On the router, Blue light is good and Orange light is bad. I power cycled the modem and router and was able to connect fine. 20 minutes later I lose my internet connection and the blue light turns orange. The router itself disconnects from the internet. The cable modem is fine and still getting it's signal. I have a PC and a Roku hooked up via ethernet. I have a 2ghz wifi with 2 smartphones on it, and a 5ghz wifi with a tablet on it. After hours of troubleshooting with the ISP, they assure me it's nothing on their end (like maybe IP changes or rejecting my router). PC connects fine if I plug directly into the modem. If I turn off the wifi radios, I'll stay connected for hours. I turned on the wifi radios, changed my wifi name and password. And then I waited an hour, still connected. I put one smartphone on the 2ghz wifi (going one device at a time). 20 minutes later, I'm browsing chrome on my phone and then lose internet. The router light goes orange and I can't connect to the internet from any device now. Is my router's wifi radio just dead? Did something break? It's not overheating. Has anyone ever experienced this? At least I still have a LAN for the time being.

Answer
Yes.

I have seen such happen on many routers. Weird failures so let's try the usual first.

Factory reset the router, make sure the firmware is current (if updating, factory reset after the firmware install) and then make as few changes as possible to bring the router online.

Re-test and if it fails, try another router.

Don't have another router

Thanks for answering. The firmware version is the only one offered by belkin. I re-applied it anyway since it let me. So, firmware up to date. Reset didn't work. I thought maybe it was overheating so I had a fan blowing 40 degree farenheit air directly into it. I turned the wifi on and around 15 minutes later when I thought it was fixed... it went out again. I understand things happen with routers but the timing concerns me. The cable companies node goes out, my modem gets a hard power reset, all of a sudden like clockwork my router gets shut down if i turn on the wifi.

Routers are like that.

This is why all our techs carry a spare router on the call.

Routers that fail like this are never repaired even in warranty. I'm sure you can guess why.

Router logs of what happens
Dec 16, 2016 1:03AM PST

So, I power cycle the modem and router and everything connects. I play youtube on my phone, play netflix on my roku, and mess around on my pc. After a while Internet goes out at Dec 15 23:58. I power cycle just the modem, so I can keep this log. It actually reconnects. I enjoy a movie on netflix for a while until it disconnects again Dec 16 00:52:48. I power cycle the modem and it reconnects. This is all the dumb log shows.
