Before I install Ubuntu...

Dec 6, 2005 8:03AM PST

I just got my Unbuntu cd's in the mail, and I have a question before I intall it. Does the cd (5.10) have the kernel sources or at the very least the headers on it. They are listed in the package list website as "Universe"

I am asking because my computer has one of those software modems and the kernel headers are needed to build the module.

Hm....

Don't know about the headers, but my software modum worked out of the box with Ubuntu 5.04... maybe you don't need to build it at all?

Its worth a shot.

Nope

No headers, and no module. There are some other things that I did not like as well. The mouse operates strangely and there was some "static" of a sorts when moving anything around in X. This computer just does not agree with Ubuntu. Oh well, back to SuSE 7.3 (yeah its old, but it works)

I don't know what "windoze" is. If you ware seeking help its better to not use such a term.

Everybody knows what windoze and microwave, etc, etc, is. Thats the reason a lot of us newbie's are looking into linux. Patience, ya gotta cut us a little slack while we try to catch up, please.

Since you know, please share.

Please help avoid any misunderstandings by using terms such as MacOS, Linux and more so there is never an OS war here.

yes

It comes with a partitioner, but it is kind of hard to understand at first. Don't use the default settings.

If you use google and search for "HOWTO install ubuntu" or "install ubuntu (with) windows" or "Guide install ubuntu" you should find many illustrated step by step instructions that will tell you how to do this.

You can run AOE under GNU/Linux with a tool called wine.

Good Luck!

Ubuntu?

Do you mean Ubuntu? If so, it is one of the many Linux distrobutions. Ubuntu is very easy to install, and is excellent for anyone just getting into Linux. See http://www.ubuntulinux.org/ for more info.
