Bebo website will not display corectly anymore! :(

Jun 25, 2007 12:46AM PDT

Okay firstly no uncalled for mocking. I am a regular user of the bebo.com website (a myspace alternative)!

Recently I have been unable to display the website correctly on my home computer. This appears to have coincided with a new and ?improved? website design of bebo.

I can access the site and I can functionally use it ? I can logon, read comments and write comments!

Problem is it does not display correctly. The site appears as a white page. No jpegs or gifs display (can?t view photos/banners Happy /background images.)!
Flash images/moves do display!
The normal tab buttons at the top of all bebo pages appear as normal text links displayed vertically down the page.
Formatting goes out the window ? writing is large and unstructured. Normal page boundaries are gone ? I have to use the horizontal scroll bar to see some details.
Page takes an exceptionally long time to load! Despite been on 2 MB broadband.

I believe many others are experiencing the same problem as I have searched the net for answers and the very poor bebo forms (comments on articles they write) - however no solution has been given as yet.

What I?ve done:

First things first I switched from firefox to my backup browser IE 7! Exact same problem, even went back to IE 6 and had the same problem. I reinstalled firefox again.
For both browsers I deleted temporary files/history/cookies!
I have reset web settings to default settings.
I do not use my own proxy server ? my connection to the internet is set as always to automatic detect settings.
I ran spyware (adaware, Pc Doctor, AVG ) and anti virus ( Avast and Pc Defender) software.
I have reinstalled adobe flash and shockwaves. I have turned off my firewall ? and still nothing.
Java also appears to be okay on my computer!

However I am able to view bebo perfectly by using a proxy site http://www.xroxee.com/ - i don?t understand this however - what is the problem - why can i view it through the proxy site and not without.

I emailed bebo about this issue looking for answers and I received this reply

?I apologize for the error. There is a temporary problem with the Bebo site.
We are working on a solution for this and it should be implemented soon. I am very sorry for any inconvenience caused. ?
(Not very informative, in fact of no help what so ever- also there has been no change and I personally do not see anything changing anytime soon).

This is the only website I have any problem with. What could the problem be. Could it possibly to do with my service provider blocking half the site!!! (NTL)
It hardly could be a RAM issue????
Even if it is a problem with the bebo website I don?t see why I can?t resolve it myself seeing that the page does display as normal for 99% of users.

Any ideas??? Any other confused and frustrated suffers???

Thanks,
Fergal

And the problem is?
Jun 25, 2007 7:20AM PDT

This has been a problem for at least 3 weeks and there is no sign of change. Maybe it is a problem with the bebo site, maybe there is something in the htlm/java code or whatever but there appears to be no change. My problem is the fact that I can not view it properly at home and I want to know why. I view bebo at work, all my many friends on bebo have no such problems, people with much older computers than me can view it and I'm quite certain the vast majority of people who view the website yourself included can indeed view everything without any errors.

As I tried to explain, I see no reason why i should be able to view it on one computer and not on another. It should be possible for me to resolve this error myself - do you not think so?????(

So Have Y0u Tried?

1. Installing the NEWEST version of Sun Java? Please try the steps below:

If you're using an XP SP2 computer, (I don't believe you've told us the operating system of your computer), then please follow the steps below to update your Java and scripting engine:

First, install the most recent version of Java and the newest Windows Script Engine using the instructions below:

Click on the link to Sun's Java below, then click on the ''Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u1'' download button. Follow the prompts, accept the license agreement, then download the full ''Windows Offline Installation'' file to your desktop,(about 15 MB), scan it with your antivirus (just to be sure it's clean). Once that's done, if you've already got a Sun Java version on the computer, (It appears like you may not though) open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Add/Remove Programs'' section, then uninstall all previous versions of the J2SE Java listed there. Once that's done, then install Java JRE 6u1 from the downloaded installer.

http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp

AFter that, please download and install the updated Script engine from the appropriate link below:

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows XP and Windows 2000

After everything is installed, then open the Control Panel, double click on the ''Internet Options'' icon, then click on the ''Advanced'' tab. When that loads, scroll down to the ''Java(Sun)'' section and make sure there is a CHECK mark next to: ''Use JRE 1.6.0....''. Click on Apply. Then scroll to the ''Multimedia'' section and place a CHECK mark in the ''Play Sounds In Web Pages'', ''Play videos in Web Pages'', & ''Show pictures'' box and UNCHECK the box next to ''Show download Placeholders:'', then click on Apply, then Ok. Then click on the ''Security'' tab in ''Internet Options''. Once that opens, click on the ''Internet'' icon (the World globe), then click on the ''Custom Level'' button. When that loads, make sure the ''Reset to'' line says: ''Medium'', then click on the ''Reset'' button, then select ''Yes/OK''. It asks: ''Are you sure?''.

2. Download, install, update, then scan the computer for Spyware using the free tool below:

Ewido/AVG Antispyware 7.5 Tool

3. "the vast majority of people who view the website yourself included can indeed view everything without any errors". Sorry, I've never been to the site till a few minutes ago.. As with Myspace and others of their ilk, they aren't the safest neighborhood.. Be careful if you choose to stroll through such sites.

Hope this helps.

Still no joy
Jun 27, 2007 10:47PM PDT

Thanks for your 2 cents Grif, I was really hopeful of success based on your suggestions.
I had java installed but it was not the latest version (you guessed correctly I am a xp sp2 user), so I followed your instructions and updated Java, internet settings were all ready as suggested so no need for change there. I also already had AVG spyware but I gave it another run just to be sure.
Unfortunately no change to the situation.
Thank you very much for your suggestions though.
I'm really at a loss on this one, I don't understand where the problem could lie!

Is one of the subtitles on the page source. Any decent firewall or protection software should keep people off these dangerous sites.

sorry dont know what you mean by subtitles

Forget the word subtitle.
Jul 4, 2007 10:39AM PDT

It's a WAREZ site with all sorts of bad things. Any decent firewall and protection should block what pests I found there. So let's just say it's one hell of a site.
