BDP-1500 Blu Ray player and AVCHD disc compatibility

I see other people have been having trouble getting this machine to read AVCHD discs, so have I. I've wasted dozens of discs so far and am quietly tearing my hair out. Because I don't use a computer for anything audiovisual I can't save files in different formats or upload 'firmware upgrades'. I just expect the machine to do what it says on the tin.
