BD-P1500 and Subtitles

Dec 6, 2008 1:36AM PST

I went to watch the first Godfather on blu-ray today and the player isn't displaying the forced subtitles and I went through the other subtitles and it would not display any of them. I then tried Godfather II and Transformers and had the same problems. While other movies such as Batman Begins and The Incredible Hulk had no issues displaying subtitles.

I'm already using the newest firmware that just came out the other day, not sure if this problem happened on the older firmware or not since I was watching the Godfather disc for the first time which caused me to notice it.

Forced subtitles

Zabuki,

When you say "forced subtitles", do you mean that you choose subtitles from the main menu?

Subtitles aren't mandated on either DVD or Blu-Ray, so there's no specific guarantee that they will be available at all. That said, does the subtitle button on the remote not work as well?

Subtitles
Dec 6, 2008 3:41AM PST

By forced subtitles I meant the ones that default to on for the parts in foreign languages. Like on the Godfather, even when subtitles are set to off in the movie's setup menu, subtitle track 6 is actually selected. Hitting the subtitle buttons cycles through the available subtitles but none of them ever display.

It seems that the movies that are giving me issues with this are all put out by Paramount, could it have something to do with the way they're implementing the subtitles?

Update
Dec 6, 2008 1:20PM PST

I did a little experimenting tonight and found out that it is not displaying subtitles on these movies if the display is set to 4:3, if its set to 16:9 subtitles display just fine.

I'm in the process of moving and this is my only DVD player, and the big screen is already gone, so I'm stuck on the SD for a few days Sad

Keep me posted.

I have no idea what Paramount is doing, and I doubt they'd confirm or deny for me anyway.

I'm looking into it, but I admit here that I have limited knowledge of this issue being a widespread issue. It could be, or not. I'll see what I can find out.

Did more testing.

After playing around a bit I'm positive it has to do with the display being set to 4:3. It also appears to be more than just Paramount, I tried Cars from Disney as well and if the display is set to 4:3 I get no subtitles, however when I switch to 16:9 I can get subtitles to display. Like I said before I'm in the process of moving so I'm limited on what Blu-Rays I have that aren't packed away already, but I rechecked the other ones I mentioned like The Incredible Hulk and Batman Begins and I am able to get subtitles to display no matter if the display is 16:9 or 4:3.
