Question

battery drain in Canon S5 IS

Jul 24, 2011 12:17PM PDT

My Canon Powershot S5 IS says the batteries are low soon after putting
them in. It then shuts the camera down. Doesn't matter if the batteries
have just been fully recharged or if they are newly bought
non-rechargeable batteries. Can something wrong in the camera be draining the batteries?

I assume that you are using NiMH AA type batteries.

It is quite common for only one of the batteries to be defective and you get the type of problem you describe.

Make sure that you replace all 4 of the NiMH batteries at once.

I suggest you try to find a package of NiMH batteries that says "PreCharged"
Kodak and others sell them.
They hold a charge better.

If you use regular (non rechargeable) Alkaline batteries, they only have a life of about 40 pictures.

What an upgrade.

My first 1+ Megapixel Canon would get 10 to 20 shots per charge off the Canon supplied battery. I carried 2 or 3 batteries plus a charger. 40 pictures back then would have been sweet!
