Basic CDR question

May 26, 2004 11:31AM PDT

Hi. I have a drive that was taken out of the bag and then put back in, but never used. Would it be safe to install? I was told that because it was taken out of the bag there would be some problem with static electricity. I don't think there would be a problem but I just want to check here first.

I'll write that under normal conditions, there should be no issue.

Leon,

As Bob states, there should be no problems as long as you either grab the metal side of the case first to dissipate static or (better yet) spend the $8-$10 for a grounding strap.

I am assuming here that anyone who handled this drive before you was equally careful...

Of course it's a good idea to play it safe when pratical, but having built many computers, and worked for years in the electronic manufacturing industry I've never known a componet to get zapped this way if you use common sense and don't touch the connectors. I sure wouldn't worry about having just taken it out of the bag. I live in Houston, but in a dryer climate it may be a larger problem.
