Barriers to using Google Earth - .kmz - cannot be opened

message.

Yes, I'm a technophobe rather than technophile. In Google Earth they use these .kmz files which upon clicking to open, get the message that I have no application to open them. Google Earth is a great treat offered by Google - if we could only explore deeper into their resources.

Can anyone open the key to this?

the Google Earth experience. Without opening them, isn't that the barrier to exploring the world of Google Earth?

Perhaps I'm just not appreciating your distinction in questioning "Given what these files are?" Don't I have to open them to get to the information they contain?

The deliberate public domain nature of Google Earth & Google sky seems a nice gift. A while back, Google had some discourse on anyone with a data base of their speciality could let the public have access by putting the input into whatever the .kmz thing is.

You decide which editor to use. I found out what they were in a few seconds and decline to duplicate this here. There are a few users that feel that any file they find should do "something" when clicked on. But that's not true is it?

I would think you can open them in TextEdit.
