Question

Bang for the buck NAS System to manage 10TB of data?

Jul 21, 2015 8:24AM PDT

I have maybe 10TB of images, videos and office files scattered over external drives (mac journaled and NTFS), internal windows drives and my mac. Id like to buy or build a NAS system that can at least hold 8GB of data plus option for backup.

Been looking at QNAP, SYNOLOGY and ASUSTOR or even converting one of my windows pc's to NAS.

Please help me find an inexpensive and reliable solution.

A PC as a NAS has been done for decades. Can you share what's new in your application?

The NAS as a NAS is usually done for other reasons. For example I use a NAS for lower power consumption. Your average desktop PC can pull 100 to 200+ Watts continuously so the NAS I use is 10 Watts active and less when not working.

I'd like to know a little more why you would not use the old server methods.

So that's the server issue. What do you mean "manage"?

For me that means content sorting, locating, serving up DLNA, menus, front ends or something like a Netflix clone for your home content.

One more thing. 10TB of storage means another 20TB of backups. Some folk forget that.
