Baltimore Burning

Apr 27, 2015 12:50PM PDT

All over the news. Mayor says to let them destroy some things. Police cars burned. Senior Citizen's center burned. CVS pharmacy looted then burned. Looting in progress many places. Other fires breaking out. Murders happening in the streets. Violence going unchecked. National Guard to come tomorrow. Worst since MLK death in April 1968. Police ineffective, failing to shoot looters, failing to perform their duty properly, failing to protect property. Disgusting display of anarchy in action when authority fails to take necessary steps to end it.

Ten Pharmacies Gone
May 1, 2015 12:12PM PDT

Crime pays, and then it doesn't? Smart business decisions won't rebuild in such a place, not now.

http://www.bizjournals.com/baltimore/news/2015/05/01/heres-what-to-do-if-the-pharmacy-you-go-to-is.html

"Ten retail pharmacies are closed after fires and looting during Monday's riots and the Baltimore City Health Department is asking people who need help getting their medication to call 311.

Through the city's service request line, health department staff can help residents locate the nearest open pharmacy or schedule mail delivery of prescriptions. The health department is also arranging for some prescriptions to be delivered through its Druid Health Clinic on North Avenue.

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen said her department "will do everything possible" to make sure residents in West Baltimore and downtown neighborhoods are able to obtain needed medications.

Here's a list of the shut-down retail pharmacies:

CVS

2509 Pennsylvania Ave.
2560 W. Franklin St.

Rite Aid

238 McMechen St.
2043 Mondawmin Mall
2497 Frederick Ave.
3425 Clifton Ave.
423 E. North Ave.
250 W. Chase St.

Black Gratitude. Missing?

http://america.aljazeera.com/articles/2015/4/29/a-baltimore-neighborhood-takes-care-of-its-own-as-it-recovers-from-unrest.html

"...the last few days have been a heightened version of what has happened in recent decades. Sandtown (Baltimore 'hood) is home to more people held in state prisons than any other neighborhood in Maryland. Its poverty — nearly half the children here live under the poverty line — has drawn millions of dollars for community development efforts from the city's nonprofits. But some feel that outside help has done as much harm as good.

The cleanup on Tuesday threatened to follow a similar pattern. On Facebook, someone created an event called the "Baltimore clean-up effort," suggesting that people from all over the region take cleaning supplies to North and Pennsylvania Avenues — the heart of the chaos where a CVS pharmacy was broken into and burned — not realizing the police had closed the intersection. More than 2,000 people responded to say they would attend.

Almost immediately, the event provoked concern. "It seems like the majority of these people are from outside the community, i.e., white students or people who have never seen this community," wrote one commenter. "This event should be spearheaded by black people of the West Baltimore community and no one else. Know your place, white participants. This is not a trip to the museum."

The thread devolved into contentiousness and name calling, with some saying they would take their help elsewhere. "

Later one resident says they can do it all. Don't need the help. Yeah, hope so. We'll be watching.

One of the things mentioned is that most

of the apartments still have lead based paint on the walls and we all know what that can do to children.

Complaints were made and the white landlords were told about it and several years later there was still nothing done.

white landlords?
May 2, 2015 6:32AM PDT

Are you sure they were white? Would it have been better if they were black? I wonder if they only sue white landlords for old lead paint?

If they are white landlords, and I doubt that, they sure have all decided lately to sellout in Sandtown area of Baltimore. $30 -40K in prices in the main "blighted" area.

How about a $28 per month mortgage? Shall I tell them to reserve you one? Please tell me, why someone would want to rent from "white" landlords there when there is so much available for so cheap and often with little to no down payment.

Please find me a white landlord in that neighborhood.

Mayor Schmoke chased out the white landlords and land holders. In fact, the largest land holder in that area today is the City of Baltimore. Every vacant lot and every vacant house MUST be registered with the city. This is so they can move against it when and if they choose. No, the whites abandoned that area a long time ago. So, who are the real landlords? Well, don't know exactly, but have my guesses.
