General discussion

bad HD or IDE cable?

Feb 10, 2009 10:16AM PST

ok so here's my issue. I have just your basic setup for a computer..

p4 2.4ghz
1gig ddr ram
dvd/cd burner
nvideo geforce

and a 40gig WD HD with Windows XP Pro SP2

ok so from time to time i can hear my HD working everything is working fine, it starts up i can start to play game, listen to music, or what ever well about after 20-30mins of using it I hear slow WAY down or to a complete stop and the computer then freeze's and shuts down sometimes it will restart. When it restarts it says NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND! ok so then I would think it would be the hard drive ... take a good HD out of another computer and put it in it starts up works then dies, i put my HD in the other comp works just fines then shuts down. A temp solution i have found that works is that i can unplug the ide cable from the back of the HD for 2-5 mins plug it back in and it works well at least i can boot up to windows and login and everything then, but its been happening more frequently. Any ideas?

Cables usually don't do what you note and a 40GB drive must be over 5 or more years old.

That's good thinking.

What's common to both?

The cable and motherboard.

Question. Given the price of the cable versus the motherboard which will you change first?

Observation. That 40GB drive likely is as old at the motherboard. Do you see any BAD CAPS (see google) on that board?
