Bad external hard drive

Dec 19, 2009 1:25PM PST

I have a Western Digital external hard drive. I only had it for a little over a year now and it just went down. I have been talking to WD support and they say that a data recovery program would be able to recover my files on it. The only problem is that my laptop doesnt even recognize the device anymore. I would like to know which program if any would you recommend, hopefully it is free to download, to recover these files.
Thank you for your help with this matter. I am never buying another WD hard drive.

Just so you know.

ALL externals seem to fail. I have yet to not encounter any name that has escaped failure.

The lesson here is known to the moderators but PLEASE READ the top posts at the Cnet Storage forum for recovery ideas.

What do the moderators know? We only lose what we didn't backup.
