Most people use other programs to backup than the Microsoft one. What exactly do you want to backup, to what kind of medium or device?

Don't bother trying to use the Microsoft supplied one. You'll find that the program is only capable of backing up to tape drives of floppy disks. It is there purely for legacy support so people who might have been coming from something like NT4 can still access their backups.
There are plenty of other backup programs out there that are either free or low cost and will be more than adequate for the average user. Of course with XP's life support plug being pulled in about 3 months time, a better idea would be looking to either get a new computer or migrating to Linux on the current one. As soon as the first exploit is found for Windows after XP's support ends, everyone will race to see if XP is also vulnerable. If it is, XP will be targeted ruthlessly and there will only be mitigation options open to people still using XP. As time goes by, this situation will only get worse.
