You didn't define "backup."

For me, it's a method to copy off files from my PC to removable media. With ZERO DOLLARS I can offer that CDRW and DVDRW drives are about as cheap as it gets for the method and software that comes with the drives will create fine, compatible with other computer backups.

If you don't like the bundled software, then here's another CD/DVD recording software for FREE. http://www.cdburnerxp.se/

If you can't boot Windows and need to backup your files, then you want a KNOPPIX CD and on that you can use K3b to make CDs. Read http://tips.oncomputers.info/archives2004/0401/2004-Jan-11.htm

You can re-install software. So I never worry about backing up the system.

But what I do for my backing up is use USB external
hard drives along with a quick synchronising program for those things I can not afford to lose. I use this synchronising program to back them up also through to my networked daughter's PC. It would need to be a big disaster for me to lose all 3 backups as well as the original. With the synchronising program it is a quick exercise each day.
