Backup Issues

Jun 10, 2007 1:17PM PDT

Hey

I have just purchased an 80gig Apple iPod Video and I am very satisfied it. After uploading all of my music onto my iPod I decided it would a good measure to backup all that music to my external hard-drive. I did so without problem and from they?re on, I went on the clean my computer's hard-drive, I then accidentally deleted my entire music library

As I proceeded to upload all my music from the external hard-drive, I discovered that the upload was not very successful and created 6 gigs worth of duplicate songs, but more importantly, the upload failed to upload the entire music library, it uploaded most of it, but some albums and artists were missing. Before trying to re-piece my library, I tried to find a way to upload the music from my iPod to my computer. I am not familiar with how to do this procedure.

Any help or ideas on how to solve my problem would be greatly appreciated!

will do this for you.
CopyGear for OS X is one of them.
If you Google for "transfer music from ipod to mac" you will get numberous hits for software that will do this.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, how did you backup your iTunes to the external drive and then bring it back again?

hey Mr. Macfixit

i appreciate the help! to transfer music from my mac's harddrive to the external hard drive i simply clicked and dragged it into the window of the external hard drive, hopefully that is the right way to do it. i now realize that i should have backed up all my music onto DVDs, as there is a function within iTunes called "Back Up To Disc".

anyways thanks again for the feedback

What did you "drag and drop"?

If ALL you music tracks are inside the music folder or are actually inside iTunes, then dragging the entire music folder from one drive to another will make a workable copy.
However, iTunes will work with music wherever it is stored. Music that is not inside the music folder can still be seen in the iTunes Library window. Move the iTunes database to a different location will cause problems if the music does not go with it. This is especially true if you wipe out the drive that the music was on.
To prevent this from happening again, next time you open iTunes check the menu bar for an option called "consolidate Library". It should be under Advanced. This copies ALL your music into the iTunes Music Folder. Once that is completed, go to preferences and under Advanced, choose "Copy music to iTunes Music Folder when adding to Library"

Next time there should not be a problem
