Backup is corrupting files

Jul 11, 2004 9:37AM PDT

I am using Backup My PC (STOMP) ver. 5 to backup with. Lately when I back up, it is corrupting some of the folders and files! I have scanned and used utils to check the HD's also and can not find anything. I restored the files from an earlier backup set, at which time all the files are ok, but, once the backup starts, files go bad..not always the same files and or whole folders. I also did a low level format on the HD's in the event something might be lurking and just not showing up in the scans, did not help. AND, to really confuse me...I just tried another backup, Genie Backup Manager Pro ver 5, with a healthy set of files, and got the same thing..corruption. Any ideas...I am lost. Thanks.

I liked that some time ago.

Turns out some issue with the Intel Accelerator drivers dealt it a death blow and I can't use it anymore. No fix ever surfaced...

But I wonder if you have some other ongoing issue such as bad ram since another backup is mangling the hard disk.

Is the BIOS current?

Have you tried it with just 512 Megabytes?

Are the drives in NTFS?

NTFS, W2K Pro up to date..and BIOS is current. I ran MemTest and no problems showing there..I will run it with 512 and swap off..can not hurt anymore. Are there other symptoms if it is ram that I shoudl be seeing also. Thanks.

In theory, but when theory fails, we have to experiment.

I've found MEMTEST to not be the total answer. But I left out some key item.

The hard disk should be using the newer 80 Conductor IDE cables. Is it?

What's on the Hard Disk IDE channel?

It is a round 80 conductor cable on IDE 1; master and slave. IDE 2 is the TDK CD Rom only.

A little detail.

"It is a round 80 conductor cable on IDE 1; master and slave."

With 80 conductor cables, the jumpers are Cable Select. While master/slave may work, you should try CS.

Will try CS also. I built the same system, mobo, cpu and memory, for a friend..maybe I can borrow his memory and run a backup after I restore the files and see what I get. And then try swamping my two piece in and out.. Thanks..

Follow-up

Finally finished restoring from a good backup; removed a stick of memory and did a backup - which was ok this time. Removed that stick, tried the other piece - ok also. Put both 512 sticks in, did another backup...no problems again. I did backups with both Genie and BUMP. Not sure what the issue was since I did not get any corruption at all - NONE!. I also changed over to cable select and did a backup with both pieces of memory - no problems. So, no news is good news I guess, but, it does leave me a little concerned...but, I do have a good FULL backup from this point. Thanks.

By all this wiggling and such, you may have cured a flighty or sometimes there connection. Not unheard of...
