Question

Backup and Recovery

Either Microsoft or the manufacturer wants me to upgrade Backup and Recovery.

All the online help for backup and recovery looks different than my system or doesn't work on my system because it all looks different.

I don't really want to pay for backup and recovery.

Does anyone know of any up to date sources or really free programs to backup my system?

They want $39.95 to upgrade Backup and Recovery

I called Dell and they want $39.95 for an upgrade to Backup and Recovery.

I would rather deal with someone else than show them they can be chiselers and charge me again for what I already paid.

Then if WD or Seagate, maybe even Hitachi(Seagate owned) and goto the support website. They have the "basic" Acronis s/w to back-up/recovery. That's free but limited abilities. Of course, you can buy the full-featured s/w. You may want to check the "downloads section" here at CNET and find a freebie. Are you saying MS own backup isn't present? I think Dell's is more of the "data safe" or process which uses online service not necessarily the cloud in order to work. Yeah, anyway to get more funds from you if that's a paid for service.

You can make the restore media for free, which is required by the Windows EULA, but the rest is basically useless.

CloneZilla is free and while it's somewhat limited, gets the basic job done. You could also pair that with something like the File History feature built into Windows to provide more granular backups for documents.

I wish I could remember now what it is I disabled to keep that stupid backup and recovery thing from loading, but I remember I found it via a google search so the info's out there.

You don't need to back-up your system, just back-up all the files you have; like music, installer, office files, picture and movie..or to minimize error in your system just make system restore point to your PC to avoid reformating of your PC..Read here to learn
