Backing up netbook - can use/share spare HD?

Oct 3, 2010 6:03AM PDT

I got this netbook Acer Aspire One a year ago for use when travelling and it is quite useful. Every time I switch it on it asks me whether I want to back up the system now. It sounds an advisable thing to do.

I understand by this it means not backing up my data, but the putting a copy of the operating system system ON A DISK, so that if damaged I could reconstitute it. Understand like on a CD or DVD type disk.

Only the Acer Aspire One doesn't have a slot for disks.

I do have a couple of hard disks that I use for data back up with data files on them that I can attach to the netbook via usb. But I have been told I cannot put PROGRAMMES or OPERATING SYSTEMS onto hard disks or it is terribly complicated. I want to keep the data on them, don't know if can add this other thing, and don't want to try things that may be impossible.

Can I just do this?

You are repeating what others have done before and with all due respect you are headed for trouble. Your netbook does not come with an USB DVDRW drive since it's an option. Once you get that external USB DVDRW drive you can create your restore media and more.

I've lost count of folk that didn't get said drive and then flame everyone and every company for this issue.

And no, you can't use an USB HARD DRIVE instead.
