Question

Backing up iphone pics/video onto SD cards

I've backed up photos & video from my iphone to an external hard drive. I don't want to rely solely on an external hard drive (or even just an external hard drive and Cloud storage) and plan to also backup those iphone photos/video to SD cards.

The big questions I have are:

1. Which is the best route to get those iphone photos/video onto SD cards? Is it OK to transfer those photos/video from the external hard drive to SD cards, will photo/video shooting info be lost, will quality of photo/video suffer?

2. Or, is it best to get the photos/video onto SD cards directly from the iphone where they were originally shot?

3. Or, is there no difference & I should simply pick the easiest method?

Answer
I think that #3 is the best answer here,

you will not be altering the quality of the file by moving it to another location and I think the meta data will remain intact over the move

It can be done easily

With iTunes and a PC, you can transfer images and videos from iPhone to SD card.

iTunes isn't needed/required for this
Jun 3, 2015 2:06AM PDT

The OP can simply plug in the iPhone via its data cable to a PC's USB port, then copy over the photos/videos. The PC may have to first load a driver, but that's usually not a problem.

iTunes just mucks up something which is more easily handled elsewhere Wink

Missing the point of the question here,
Jun 3, 2015 9:11AM PDT

Note that the OP stated "I've backed up photos & video from my iphone to an external hard drive."

Then went on to ask the best way of three to transfer those files to SD cards.

The photo's are NOT on the iPhone so any posting about iTunes and PC's or iPhones and Data Cables is irrelevant.

Just saying

You make an excellent point, however...

...in all fairness though, you should have replied to the person I was replying to in the thread regarding iTunes. My solution, as presented, would also address the OP's dilemma, since the external drive would presumably be connected via USB and accessible via the PC/Mac as well to copy over files to an SD card (w/ adapter, or built in slot). Perhaps we should have been more explicit in that part of the whole 'adventure' Wink

I do not quite agree

I do not quite agree with it, if it's photos or videos, OP may not just copy it to the PC directly? right?

Incorrect

I regularly copy and paste/manually backup/transfer photos/videos
from my current iPhone 5S to all sorts of PCs.
Once Windows detects and installs the correct driver
you are good to go.

Backup images/videos onto iCloud

Why not backup all your pictures and videos from iPhone to iCloud? I know Apple provide 5GB free space for every Apple ID account.

Updated Info advice/suggestion

Have done Cloud as well since it's a good idea to have pics & video backed up/saved to multiple formats of media. Also, as an FYI to anyone interested since I originally posted my question(s), I had a conversation with a photographer who owns a camera store (store founded by it's original owner in 1926). He said he's found SD cards (regardless of high or low their Class rating) not to be a reliable source of long term storage for photos or video. Currently, in addition to a cloud, he suggests multiple external hard drives with one of those external hard drives kept off site (such as your bank safety deposit box). In my case, currently, all my photos & video are able to fit on a 1TB external hard drive. Now that I've finished loading my 64GB worth of pics & video from my phone into an ext hard drive and a Cloud, I've picked up a second 1TB ext hard drive. The second one will become a photo/video duplicate of the first and will be kept in my safety deposit box at the bank. For digital pictures frames here at home, etc I'll still copy pics/video onto SD cards for ease of use. However, I was thankful for the advice of multiple external hard drives...can't believe I didn't think of that myself.

You are preaching to the choir ;)

Many of us are already doing what you have posted above, nearly identical procedure actually. Do a little googling and you will see it posted nearly verbatim elsewhere too Wink
It's all about data redundancy. Given the fact that a 1TB drive can be had now for ~$50, it makes little sense NOT to do this.

You can backup iPhone photos with iCloud
1. Make sure that your iPhone is connecting with Wi-Fi.
2. Go to setting>iCloud>photos> Backup. And all photos is backup to iCloud. Of course you are required to log in your Apple account.
3.Log in Apple account again on your computer iCloud, and you can sync photos from the backup files. The other one is with iPhone Transfer to backup photos directly.

Sometimes if you think it is inconvenient to backup iPhone pics or videos with iPhoto because it takes too much time, you can just google some tools to do that soon.

Yes, there are other ways for you to backup iPhone Pics. Enable Photo Stream on your phone. Go to Settings → Photos & Camera. Toggle "My Photo Stream" on. Go to Systems Preferences and click on iCloud. Make sure Photo Stream is checked. Go to iPhoto preferences and click Photo Stream. Make sure My Photo Stream is checked. If you want to automatically transport all photos you take to iPhoto, make sure Automatic Import and Automatic Upload are both checked. That way, when you open iPhoto, as long as your phone is connected to wifi, your photos will automatically upload to your computer.
