Backing up Hard drive

Feb 21, 2008 1:05AM PST

Hi all,
I had to use my factory disk the other day, and it has taken me days to get my laptop back to how I like it.

I would like to create a disk, if possible, that restores my laptop to it's current state in the event of me messing up my system again (I ran a duplicate file cleaner that messed up my OS - whoops!)

What is the best way to go about this? Bearing in mind I know my way around a computer a little and can follow instructions, but I am no expert!

I would rather do this for free, of course, but I am prepared to spend a few quid if need be.

Thank you in anticipation,

Damian.

...very droll, but I was actually looking for advice as to the effectiveness/value etc. of certain methods.

I obviously googled and found references to Acronis and other methods -but I can usually rely on a bit of trusted quality feedback/help from this site, so thought I would give it a whirl.

Thanks for your time.

You are asking a frequently asked question.

So the replies should tend to be on the short side. Acronis is one of the better answers here. Ghost needs a serious upgrade to come close to this.

Sorry that "the answer" is unacceptable.

...I thought I would end up using that.

Sorry if I appeared to snap been a long day and had my share of abruptness. I should be grateful! Sorry.

Thanks again!

The Best Backup Software
Feb 21, 2008 10:46AM PST

This is rated # ONE by PC Magazine. It is StorageCraft's Shadow Protect. With a laptop or Desktop you can back it up on Dvd's, or on an Internal or External drive. My laptop has an External Drive which I plug into a USB port. I use this also on my Desktop.
The programmers who developed this software are the best, They wrote Partition Magic and Digital Image, etc. It not only does a full Image of your Drive, but you can edit any of the files in the Image run Antivus Software on them or anything else and then replace them. You can put the Image on another computer. If the Motherboard Drivers are different afterwards you may have to run them for Audio, etc.

Backup
Feb 27, 2008 7:31AM PST

I bought an external hard drive to back up my internal hard drive.
I use Acronis True Image, ver 10, I think and have been totally satisfied with it.
I don't keep the external hard drive connected, except for the backup function.

I have heard people say...

...that EAZ-FIX is even better than a backup, and much faster. But I've never used it myself. Might be something to look in to, though.
