background programs

How can I tell what programs are running in the background and which ones are set to run at startup?
Also, can someone recommend a good popup stopper? They're so annoying. Thx, wsh

on the operating system used on your computer.

Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be of much help:

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.

If you are using Win XP, click on START ... RUN. Type in MSCONFIG.

Click the SERVICES tab and the STARTUP tab.

For the BEST PopUp stopper I have found. I use Mozilla 1.7b. It has built in popup stopper and it is very effective. If you use Mozilla for about 2 weeks to get used to it, I don't think you would go back to the other browser.

Also, I find Mozilla email program better than MS email.

Dan, Although You're Close,,,Firefox Isn't Perfect..
Apr 20, 2004 4:18AM PDT

Here's a link to a good pop up stopper test.
http://www.kephyr.com/popupkillertest/index.html

Click on the link above and give it a try. I ran it on my Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers last night and 2 out of the ten pop ups got through on Firefox. (Both of them were the "Mouse over" variety.) Granted, that's really good and it's a whole bunch better that Internet Explorer with no pop up blocker, but the Google toolbar on Internet Explorer seems to snag 10 for 10 in this particular test.

Hope this helps.
